When we think of safety at sea, we usually imagine life jackets, flares, and radios. But the greatest danger is not always visible… until it is too late.

According to the Directorate General of the Merchant Marine, 77% of maritime emergencies involving recreational vessels last summer were caused by structural or mechanical failures. Engines that fail to start, electrical problems, discharged batteries, or faulty steering systems are the silent culprits behind hundreds of incidents every year.

Safety begins at the dock

As part of its “Mitos que hacen aguas” (Myths that hold no water) campaign, the Ministry of Transport reminds us that knowing the sea is not enough; you must prepare the vessel. Ignoring a periodic inspection or postponing that small repair can be the trigger for an emergency on board. And most importantly: many of them are completely avoidable.

Proper boat maintenance—engine, batteries, fuel, electrical systems, bilge, rudder, anchors, etc.—is the first line of defense. It is your real insurance before setting sail.

The law of the sea is not a myth

With the slogan “Turn a deaf ear to the siren songs and listen to the law of the sea,” the campaign seeks to raise awareness without causing alarm. It is about enjoying the sea responsibly. Because being prudent is not about being afraid: it is about having respect for an environment that is as beautiful as it is unpredictable.

A simple gesture, a huge difference

A timely inspection, a new battery, or an oil change are not minor details. They are decisions that can prevent a grounding, a rescue, or something worse. And most importantly: they protect lives.

What can we do as owners?

The Ministry’s campaign highlights some dangerous habits that we must eradicate: setting sail without enough fuel, trusting that “everything is fine,” using expired life jackets, or leaving inspections for “next time”250616 NP Safety Campaign….

Therefore, they recommend following a technical checklist before every voyage, such as:

-Checking the status and charge of batteries.

-Checking oil, coolant, and fuel levels.

-Verifying the operation of the bilge system.

-Examining navigation lights and electrical connections.

-Securing lines, anchors, and windlasses.

-Confirming the availability and good condition of life jackets and safety equipment
