When we think of safety at sea, we often imagine life jackets, flares, and radios. But the greatest danger isn’t always visible… until it’s too late.

According to the Directorate General of Merchant Marine, 77% of maritime emergencies on recreational boats last summer were caused by structural or mechanical failures. Engines that won’t start, electrical problems, dead batteries, or faulty steering systems are silent culprits of hundreds of incidents each year.

Safety Begins at the Dock

As part of its campaign “Myths that don’t hold water”, the Ministry of Transport reminds us that knowing the sea isn’t enough; you must prepare the boat. Ignoring regular maintenance or postponing that small repair can trigger an onboard emergency. And the most serious part: many of them are completely avoidable.

Proper boat maintenance—engine, batteries, fuel, electrical systems, bilge, rudder, anchors, etc.—is the first line of defense. It’s your real insurance before setting sail.

The law of the sea is not a myth

With the slogan “Turn a deaf ear to the siren songs and listen to the law of the sea”, the campaign aims to raise awareness without causing alarm. It’s about enjoying the sea responsibly. Because being prudent isn’t about being afraid: it’s about respecting an environment as beautiful as it is unpredictable.

A simple gesture, a huge difference

A timely inspection, a new battery, or an oil change are not minor details. They are decisions that can prevent a grounding, a rescue, or worse. And most importantly: they save lives.

What can we do as owners?

The Ministry’s campaign highlights some dangerous habits we need to eradicate: setting sail without enough fuel, relying on the “everything is fine”, using expired life jackets, or leaving inspections for “next time”.

Therefore, they recommend following a technical checklist before each voyage, such as:

-Check battery condition and charge.

-Check oil, cooling, and fuel levels.

-Verify bilge system operation.

-Examine navigation lights and electrical connections.

-Secure ropes, anchors, and windlasses.

-Confirm availability and good condition of life jackets and safety equipment.
